Darla Sue Dollman
Darla Sue Dollman+ has a BA in English and MFA in Creative Writing from Colorado State University where she taught creative writing, literature, composition, and first-year introductory courses. She also taught Composition courses at the University of Northern Colorado and Technical Business Writing at Aims Community College. She has 32 years experience as a freelance investigative journalist and staff journalist for publications such as the Littleton Independent and the Rio Rancho Observer, and editor for numerous newspapers and magazines, including TV Guide Magazine's Montana edition and the Niwot Tribune. She wrote restaurant review columns for many years for publications such as The Denver Catholic Register and Albuquerque Living Magazine.
She currently has numerous works of fiction and nonfiction available online and in print. Recent print publications include "The Ludlow Massacre," published in the November 2009 issue of History Magazine and "Blood on the Sangre de Christos," a short fiction piece included in the anthology Midnight Lullabies.
Dollman wrote numerous biographies for the website History's Women:The Unsung Heroines, including Christina Georgina Rossetti and Mother Jones.
Dollman is an amateur wildlife photographer and has photographs on display in Johnson City, Texas. She is particularly interested in photographing vultures, hawks and eagles, and often writes about endangered species. She writes about birds, lizards, and other little creatures at: Blessed Little Creatures, a blog she has maintained since 2008.
Dollman spent her childhood camping, backpacking, and exploring ghost towns with her family in the Colorado Rocky Mountains and now spends her spare time exploring old mining camps and ghost towns in Texas, New Mexico and Colorado. She is a constant student of the history of the American West. Dollman writes about the history of the American West at: Wild West History,
Dollman is also a dedicated fan of silent films, early talkies, and Westerns. She studied acting and film as a teenager and now does most of her writing late in the evening to the background sounds of black and white films on the television. These films and their exceptionally-talented actors and actresses often become the subjects of her articles for Suite 101. Dollman also writes about classic films at Classics!
Dollman also loves the water, has owned a wide variety of boats through the years and competed in many regattas throughout the Southwest.
Gustnadoes: Dust Devils in Thunderstorms by Darla Sue Dollman received an Editor's Choice Award from Suite 101 in October of 2011, and The Hoof Prints and Heart Beats Organization: Healing with Horses received an Editor's Choice Award from Suite 101 in November of 2011. In December of 2011, her article Henry Stephens Salt and the Argument for Animal Rights also received an Editor's Choice Award.
